Best Dozen Photo Challenge Image

A Live Picture of my Best Friend, Esther Greenly performing with her live band, "The Updowns" in Baltimore, Maryland.

For this assignment, I chose this image of my best friend's performance as my most successful photo. I think it works well because it captures a real moment with energy and emotion. The three musicians are all doing something different, which makes the image feel active instead of posed. The drummer, bassist, and singer/guitarist create a strong rule of odds because there are three main subjects, and that helps the viewer’s eye move across the whole photo.

I also like the way the vertical format works in this image. Since the room has tall windows, curtains, lights, and microphone stands, the vertical frame helps show the full performance space. The background adds a lot of character because of the patterned curtains and string lights. There is also some repetition in the windows, curtains, lights, and microphone stands, which makes the photo more visually interesting. Even though the image is busy, it still feels like a real concert setting, which is part of why I like it.

The most challenging part of this assignment was trying to take a strong photo in a crowded indoor space with difficult lighting. I was completely cramped in the audience and it was hard to get completely symmetrical with the picture as I had no room to move around. The room had warm lights, shadows, people in the foreground, instruments, wires, and microphone stands, so it was hard to control the background and keep the focus on the performers. Since the musicians were moving, it was also difficult to capture a clear moment where everyone looked natural.

In the future, I want to create stronger images by paying more attention to my position before taking the photo. I would try moving around more, taking shots from different angles, and waiting for the best moment instead of just taking the picture quickly. Although this may not be possible depending on the environmental setting. I also want to work on background control so there are fewer distractions around the subject. For concert or event photography, I would try to get closer, adjust the exposure better, and use composition rules like the rule of thirds or negative space to make the image feel more intentional.
